Jackson Ekow, a 41-year-old electrician subcontracted by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has been arrested by the New Weija Police Command for allegedly aiding an illegal power connection. This action reportedly enabled a customer to steal electricity worth GH¢156,000.
Ekow, accused of reconnecting power to a 4-bedroom apartment at “Cassava Farm” in Accra without ECG’s authorization, was charged with theft and meter tampering at the Weija Circuit Court. He was granted bail of GH¢12,000 and is set to reappear in court on December 24, 2024.
The ECG initially disconnected the illegal connection and invited the apartment caretaker, who instead hired Ekow to restore power unlawfully. Dr. Mark Owusu Ansah, ECG’s Revenue Protection Manager, warned against employing unauthorized technicians and emphasized intensified monitoring and the use of technology to detect illegal connections.
The Accra West Region of ECG, which oversees eight districts, remains committed to prosecuting offenders and ensuring compliance within its power distribution system.
