A new Afrobarometer survey, conducted in August 2024, revealed that 61% of Ghanaians are considering emigrating, citing economic hardship as the primary driver. This marks a significant rise from 41% in 2017.
Out of the 61%, 44% have thought about it “a lot”, while 17% have given it some or little consideration. Among these, the desire for work opportunities (44%) and economic stability remain the leading motivations. Other factors include tourism (3%), better business prospects (3%), and education (2%).
Demographics of Potential Emigrants:
- Educated individuals are the most likely to leave, with 78% of post-secondary graduates considering emigration.
- The youth, aged 18-35 years, make up 72% of those with emigration thoughts.
- Unemployed people (68%), part-time workers (65%), and full-time employees (63%) are also highly inclined to leave.
Destinations of Choice:
- North America (55%) and Europe (24%) were identified as the most preferred regions.
About the Survey:
The study was part of Afrobarometer’s Round 10, involving 2,400 adult Ghanaians through face-to-face interviews in preferred languages, led by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).
The report highlights growing concerns over Ghana’s economic conditions and the brain drain implications.
