A Nigerian man, Eseni Chima (54), was charged with murder for allegedly beating his wife, Ugochukwu, to death with an iron rod. The incident occurred on September 4, 2024, at their residence on 60 Ogbaga Road, in the Kpirikpiri area of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The prosecutor, Emmanuel Monday, presented the case at the Abakaliki Magistrate’s Court on December 17, 2024, stating that the offense violated Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ebonyi State, 2009.
The presiding Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, declined to take Chima’s plea due to a lack of jurisdiction and instructed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. Further proceedings were adjourned to December 31, 2024.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, with increasing calls for stricter legal measures and public awareness campaigns to combat such incidents.
