A fire outbreak early Tuesday morning at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra has destroyed ballot boxes from the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections for the Ablekuma North Constituency. The constituency’s parliamentary results remain unresolved, with the Electoral Commission planning to re-collate the votes.
The Ghana Police Service and the Fire Service have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire. Initial reports suggest the blaze started around 10 p.m. on Monday and engulfed the school’s three-story block, which housed the election materials, library, and ICT lab. Some thumb-printed ballots were found burned behind the building, raising suspicions of arson.
Authorities are working to ensure the incident does not disrupt academic activities for the school’s 1,200 learners. Meanwhile, 132 people across Ghana have been arrested for post-election violence, with 45 remanded, 71 on police bail, and 16 on court bail.
