Fire Destroys Ballot Boxes in Disputed Ablekuma North Parliamentary Race.

In a dramatic turn of events, a fire outbreak at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools has destroyed ballot boxes and papers belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC) for the Ablekuma North Constituency. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 17, 2024, adds tension to an already contentious parliamentary race.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the blaze was extinguished by 3:35 AM without casualties. However, the fire completely consumed the ground floor—housing EC ballot materials, printers, and papers—while partially damaging the upper floors. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Political Tensions in Ablekuma North

The Ablekuma North parliamentary race remains one of the most disputed in Ghana. Initially, the EC declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC the winner but later retracted, citing irregularities. The reversal and ordered re-collation have sparked fierce opposition from the NDC, while the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, also claims victory.

With both parties at odds and political stakes high, the destruction of electoral materials raises concerns about transparency and credibility.

Police and Public Response

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of a thorough investigation, promising that those responsible will face justice. Authorities have also urged residents to remain calm as investigations proceed.

This incident comes amid rising post-election disturbances nationwide, with police reporting 132 arrests linked to election-related violence.
