The United States Embassy in Accra has inaugurated a new EducationUSA Centre in Osu, Accra, to provide Ghanaian students with support in pursuing higher education in the United States. The facility, launched on November 27, 2024, becomes the second of its kind in Ghana, complementing the existing centre in Kumasi.
The EducationUSA Centre, part of a global network spanning 170 countries, offers guidance on US higher education, including student visa processes, application assistance, and workshops for test preparation.
US Commitment to Education
Virginia Palmer, the US Ambassador to Ghana, emphasized the centre’s role in enhancing educational and cultural exchanges between the two nations. She highlighted Ghana’s growing interest in US education, ranking 18th globally in sending students to the US. Ghanaian students received over $9.2 million in scholarships across 680 institutions last year.
“This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering strong ties through education. Equipping students with the tools for success benefits both Ghana and the US,” Ambassador Palmer remarked.
Boosting Opportunities for Ghanaian Students
Maamle Andrews, Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, expressed excitement about the centre’s potential to simplify the application process for students. She highlighted its role in improving Ghana’s human capital development by enabling students to pursue advanced skills and return to contribute to national growth.
Professor Notse Nii Nortey Owuo IV, Osu Mantse, also praised the centre, noting its potential to inspire Ghanaian students to dream big and help address critical challenges facing the nation through education.
Call to Action
The centre aims to inspire more students to take advantage of available resources and pursue higher education opportunities in the US, bridging cultural and educational gaps while equipping students with globally competitive skills.
