U.S. Urges Investigation Into Election-Related Deaths in Ghana.

The United States has called for a thorough investigation into the deaths of at least four individuals during Ghana’s recently concluded general elections. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement on December 10, expressing condolences to the victims’ families and stressing the importance of accountability.

“We are aware of reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths,” Secretary Blinken said, adding that the U.S. remains committed to supporting Ghana’s democratic stability.

This call for investigation coincided with the Electoral Commission’s declaration of John Dramani Mahama as President-elect and Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President-elect.

While commending Ghana for a transparent electoral process, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of addressing violence to uphold democratic values. He applauded poll workers, civil society groups, and security forces for their roles in ensuring credible elections and also recognized outgoing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results.

The U.S. reaffirmed its partnership with Ghana, pledging to work closely with the incoming administration.
