Ferry services on the Oti River, managed by the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC), have resumed after a faulty propeller left vehicles stranded for days. The ferry, which broke down last Friday at Dordoe-Korpe in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region, was repaired on Sunday, restoring the flow of vehicles moving between the north and south of Ghana.
The breakdown had caused long queues of cargo vehicles and led to the tragic death of Kofi Twee, a 55-year-old diver who became entangled in the propeller. Daniel Andy Peprah-Agyei, VLTC’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that mechanics worked diligently to repair the ferry and ensure it was safe for passengers. All stranded vehicles and passengers were safely transported to their destinations by Sunday evening.
Passengers expressed relief but called on the government to build a bridge over the Oti River, highlighting the recurring risks posed by the ferry service and the need for a long-term solution.
