The Central Region of Ghana holds significant sway in the country’s political landscape, often serving as a key indicator of presidential election outcomes. Since Ghana transitioned to multiparty democracy in 1992, the region has consistently supported the eventual winner of presidential races.
A Crucial Battleground
With 23 constituencies, the Central Region is a strategic focus for political parties due to its swing-vote nature. Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recognize the importance of securing votes here to boost their chances of winning the presidency.
Election Trends
In the 2012 elections, John Dramani Mahama of the NDC won the Central Region, leading to his presidential victory. The NDC dominated both the presidential and parliamentary races, reflecting the region’s historical support for the eventual winner.
However, the 2016 elections saw a major shift. Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP won the region decisively, securing 91,406 more votes than Mahama. The NPP also gained a majority in the region’s parliamentary seats, flipping the previous NDC dominance.
The 2020 elections introduced a “skirt and blouse” pattern, where voters supported different parties in the presidential and parliamentary races. Although Akufo-Addo won the presidency in the region, the NDC captured more parliamentary seats. This outcome highlighted a more complex voting behavior influenced by various issues, including Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School policy.
Looking Ahead to 2024
As the 2024 elections approach, the Central Region remains a critical battleground. With around 3 million residents and over 1.5 million registered voters, the region’s youth population will be a key factor. Issues such as employment and economic management will likely dominate the political discourse.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, will face the challenge of maintaining the party’s support in the region, while John Dramani Mahama aims to leverage his experience and promise of change to sway voters.
The Central Region’s voting behavior will be a crucial determinant in the upcoming election, providing insights into the broader national outcome. The choice between Bawumia’s continuity agenda and Mahama’s vision for change will be closely watched as Election Day approaches.
