Ablakwa Questions GHS85 Million Spent on Stadium Renovation.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, has raised concerns over the government’s expenditure on stadium maintenance, claiming over GHS85 million has been spent over the past five years with inadequate results.

Ablakwa alleges that more than a third of these funds were paid to companies linked to Kelvin Ofori-Atta, a relative of President Akufo-Addo and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. This scrutiny comes in the wake of a CAF ban on Ghana’s home games due to poor stadium conditions.

On social media, Ablakwa detailed the alleged mismanagement of funds, noting:

  • Essipong Stadium (GHS41.9 million): Payments were made to Cisdan Company Limited, owned by Kelvin Ofori-Atta. Despite substantial payments, the stadium’s condition remains questionable.

  • Accra Sports Stadium (GHS22.4 million): Renovations were contracted to Coupbay Ghana Limited, also owned by Ofori-Atta. Significant payments were made, but concerns persist about the value of the work done.

  • Baba Yara Stadium (GHS21.1 million): Javkier Limited received funds for renovations, yet the stadium’s appearance suggests little progress.

Ablakwa criticizes the government’s handling of these funds, accusing it of corruption and nepotism, and calling for accountability from President Akufo-Addo and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The allegations highlight a broader issue of financial mismanagement and the need for improved oversight in public spending.
