The government of Ghana has officially shut down the National Cathedral Secretariat and halted all public funding for the long-debated National Cathedral project. This decision was confirmed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during an interview on Channel One TV on April 8, 2025.
Kwakye Ofosu stated that the Secretariat—set up by the previous administration to oversee the cathedral’s construction—no longer exists, and all contracts and procurement activities tied to the project are now under the scrutiny of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The move comes amid growing concerns over transparency and financial accountability.
“This administration will not allocate a single additional cedi of public funds to this project,” he emphasized. He clarified that while the government acknowledges the religious significance of the cathedral, its completion must now be handled by private or religious entities willing to finance it themselves.
Estimates reveal that finishing the cathedral would cost around $400 million—a figure that, according to the Minister, is unjustifiable given Ghana’s pressing infrastructure and economic needs. “We simply cannot prioritize a symbolic structure over roads, schools, and hospitals,” Kwakye Ofosu added.
Critics argue that abandoning the project would waste the millions already spent, but the government holds that economic realities must take precedence. Kwakye Ofosu also rejected claims that this reflects anti-religious sentiment, citing government support for faith-based initiatives in sectors like education and healthcare.
As for the land allocated for the cathedral, no decisions have been made yet. The government plans to wait for the OSP’s findings before deciding the future of the site. The National Cathedral, championed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has been one of Ghana’s most controversial public projects in recent memory.
