Double-Track System in Ghana’s SHS to End by 2027 – Education Minister

Article arrow_drop_down

Ghana’s double-track system in senior high schools is set to be scrapped by 2027, according to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu. The announcement was made during a meeting with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in Sunyani, Bono Region.

Haruna Iddrisu stated that the government is committed to educational reform, and the elimination of the double-track system will be supported by major changes such as a revised curriculum and administrative restructuring of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). He emphasised the importance of financial accountability, calling for proper expenditure oversight through established boards.

“We expect that by the year 2027, the double-track system will be a thing of the past,” he declared.

The double-track system was introduced to manage overcrowding in schools following the implementation of the Free SHS policy, which increased enrolment numbers dramatically. While it allowed more students access to education, it also brought challenges, including reduced contact hours and logistical complications.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to investing in infrastructure and human capital development, stressing that GETFund would remain instrumental in upgrading school facilities nationwide. This marks a pivotal shift in Ghana’s education landscape, signalling a return to a single-track system that stakeholders have long demanded.
