President John Mahama has appointed Dr Alhassan Iddrisu as the acting government statistician, following the dismissal of Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim. Dr Iddrisu, who is currently serving as the Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance, has extensive experience in macroeconomic analysis and policy research. His appointment is effective immediately, though it is subject to mandatory consultations with the Council of State.
Dr Iddrisu has a PhD in International Development Studies from Japan’s National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, and he has worked in various positions related to national economic assessments and forecasting. He has also consulted for international organisations like Oxfam GB and the World Bank.
The outgoing government statistician, Prof. Annim, was appointed by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in March 2019 and had previously worked as an associate professor at the University of Cape Coast. The government statistician’s role is essential for the production of accurate statistical data that informs decision-making across various levels of government.
