CAF Orders Replay of AFCON Qualifier Between Cameroon and Kenya Following Match-Fixing Investigation

Article arrow_drop_down

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the decision to replay the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Cameroon and Kenya. This decision follows an extensive investigation that uncovered credible evidence of match-fixing.

The match, originally played on October 16, 2024, in Yaoundé, was deemed compromised after an investigation by FIFA’s Integrity and Compliance Unit revealed several irregularities, including potential match manipulation involving Kenyan goalkeeper Patrick Matasi. The investigation was based on a forensic review of match footage and intelligence reports from global sports integrity monitoring agencies.

CAF’s Disciplinary Committee has outlined the following resolutions:

  1. The match will be replayed at a neutral venue within the next 60 days.

  2. Several players, including Matasi, are under investigation for possible involvement in match-fixing. If found guilty, they could face lifetime bans.

  3. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) must cooperate fully with the investigation and provisionally suspend individuals under investigation from all FKF-sanctioned competitions.

  4. CAF will cover all costs related to the replay to avoid financial strain on either federation.

CAF and FIFA reaffirmed their commitment to fair play, integrity, and transparency in global football and urged all involved to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation. Further details on the date and venue for the replay will be communicated in due course.
