Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has called for the immediate arrest of three prominent figures linked to the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Tema Port.
In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on March 31, 2025, Gbande demanded that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the former Board Chairman of ECG, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the former Minister of Energy, and Samuel Dubik Mahama, the former CEO of ECG, be arrested for their involvement in the scandal.
The containers, which contained critical electrical equipment for national power distribution, went missing under suspicious circumstances, sparking widespread concern. Investigations revealed procurement irregularities and questionable transactions within ECG, raising suspicions that some government officials and ECG executives were aware of the mishandling but failed to intervene.
Gbande did not hold back, insisting that it was essential for the individuals to be held accountable. He criticized Afenyo-Markin for attempting to evade responsibility and called for urgent action, stating, “It is time for us to take action and stop instances of corruption like this.”
The scandal, which has rocked the country, has triggered calls for justice and further scrutiny of the actions of those involved in the disappearance of the containers.
