The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a professional bout in Accra and was later pronounced dead at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The incident occurred during an eight-round light heavyweight contest against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu, part of the Bel 7-Star Energy Drink Professional Boxing League (Week 15), promoted by Imax Boxing Promotions.
Olanrewaju began the match strongly but collapsed in the third round without taking any significant blows. The referee stopped the fight, and paramedics quickly provided emergency care before rushing him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after arrival.
The GBA President, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, reported the incident to the Korle Bu Police and coordinated with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC). An autopsy report is awaited to determine the exact cause of death, but early reports suggest the possibility of an induced coma.
Olanrewaju, who had an official record of 23 fights with 13 wins (12 by knockout) and 8 losses, was medically cleared by the NBBC before the fight. He held a certified professional license.
The GBA extended its condolences to the NBBC, Olanrewaju’s family, and the global boxing community, emphasizing the risks of the sport and praying for the safety of all fighters.
