The trial concerning the theft of valuables from former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah’s home took a new twist when her late brother’s involvement was revealed in court. Dapaah disclosed that her brother, Nana Akwasi Essan II, who served as a subchief under the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had some connection to the stolen items, including $210,000.
In her cross-examination, lawyer Augustine Gyamfi asked Dapaah about her royal family background, specifically if she and her family were custodians of property belonging to the Asantehene’s wife. Dapaah initially denied such a connection but later confirmed that her late brother did have a role in the Manhyia Palace.
Gyamfi went on to suggest that the jewelry alleged to have been stolen from Dapaah’s home actually belonged to the late wife of Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, and it had been returned. Dapaah, however, rejected these claims, stating that the jewelry in question had not been returned to anyone.
The trial includes seven individuals accused of conspiracy, theft, dishonestly receiving stolen property, and money laundering in connection with the alleged theft. Among the accused is Sarah Agyei, who is being defended by Gyamfi.
The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for further proceedings.
