Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has strongly condemned the sale of AirtelTigo, describing those responsible for managing the transaction as “enemies of the state.”
Speaking to the press in Parliament on March 24, 2025, George expressed deep concern over the decision to sell the telecommunications company, which was burdened with a GHC3.5 billion debt, for a nominal fee of just one dollar. He questioned the patriotism of the individuals involved in overseeing the sale and raised doubts about their commitment to the nation’s interests.
“The individuals who managed the AirtelTigo transaction are enemies of our state. To claim that they sold AirtelTigo for one dollar, while we are now faced with a bill of 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis from ATC, one of the creditors, is unacceptable,” George stated.
The Minister further elaborated on discussions with the American Embassy, which raised concerns regarding AirtelTigo’s mounting financial liabilities. George revealed that the company’s debts exceeded GHC3.5 billion and continued to accumulate interest.
“So, if anyone told you they bought AirtelTigo for one dollar, who will take responsibility for the 1.3 billion debt that remains and is growing?” he added, highlighting the financial burden inherited by the government following the sale.
George’s remarks underscore the growing controversy surrounding the sale of the telecom company and its potential impact on the nation’s financial health.
