Mahama Ayariga Condemns Military Brutality, Calls for Accountability

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has strongly condemned the military’s violent response to civilians in the Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025. In his statement, Ayariga referred to the military’s actions as “unacceptable” and emphasized that soldiers, who are tasked with maintaining law and order, should never resort to such brutality.

While acknowledging the tragic killing of a military personnel by an unknown gunman, Ayariga made it clear that the military’s retaliation by “ransacking and beating innocent civilians” was equally reprehensible. He stressed that the rule of law must always prevail and urged the military and Bawku leadership to work together to investigate the killing peacefully rather than escalating the violence.

Ayariga expressed regret that his plea for a peaceful resolution was ignored by the military command, who chose violent measures. He offered condolences to the slain soldier’s family and also extended sympathy to the victims of the military’s excessive actions. Ayariga concluded his statement by calling for collaborative efforts to resolve the crisis and expressed confidence in the intervention of the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II to bring an end to the violence in Bawku.
