The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng (also known as Akwasi Amakye), is a former close friend and colleague of Suale. He is accused of betraying Suale by leaking his photographs to a well-known politician prior to the murder.
Amakye, who worked with Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was dismissed before the tragic incident. The two were known to have collaborated on numerous investigative projects, making Amakye’s alleged betrayal particularly shocking. Reports indicate that Amakye visited Suale’s home in Madina frequently before the journalist’s death.
Suale was murdered on January 16, 2019, shortly after collaborating with the BBC on an exposé about corruption in African football. The investigation has involved international collaboration, including phone records obtained from the FBI, which revealed communications between the suspect and Suale in the days leading up to the murder.
While the arrest brings some relief to Suale’s family and colleagues, the investigation is ongoing, and questions about the police’s handling of the case persist. The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed frustration over the lack of progress and has issued a warning to escalate the matter if significant progress isn’t made by the end of March 2025.
