A soldier has been killed by unidentified gunmen in Bawku, a volatile area in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The Warrant Officer Class Two was fatally shot on March 17, 2025, near a military buffer zone in one of the conflict hotspots in the town.
This incident raises concerns about the safety of security personnel in the area, as Bawku has witnessed increasing attacks on law enforcement since violent conflict reignited in 2021. The latest killing brings the number of security officers killed in targeted attacks to three in just over two years.
Earlier incidents include the death of Constable Regina Angenu in January 2022 and the ambush of Ghana Immigration Service officers in April 2023.
The security situation in Bawku remains unstable, with rising tensions and calls for more urgent action to address the root causes of the ongoing violence. Investigations into the latest attack are ongoing, but authorities have yet to identify the assailants.
