The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has urged the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate investigation into the heartbreaking drowning of two siblings in an abandoned illegal mining (galamsey) pit.
The victims, 13-year-old Twenefuo Koranteng and 10-year-old Kwaku Antwi, drowned while swimming in an uncovered pit at Akyem Abompe in the Fanteakwa South District. Reports indicate that they were with two other children when the tragedy occurred.
The incident has left the local community devastated, prompting Mrs. Awatey to extend her condolences to the grieving families. She also called for strict enforcement of mining laws, emphasizing that illegal miners responsible for such dangerous pits must be held accountable.
“This is a painful reminder of the dangers of illegal mining. Those responsible must face the full force of the law,” she stated, vowing to crack down on unsafe mining operations.
Authorities have been directed to investigate and summon owners of suspected illegal mining sites in the area. The Minister also urged the Regional Mining Task Force to intensify efforts in combating illegal mining to prevent further tragedies.
