Nigerian Man Busted Smuggling Hepatitis B Drugs at Aflao Border

A 35-year-old Nigerian man, Obinna Robinson, has been arrested by a joint security team at the Aflao Border for allegedly smuggling a large quantity of Hepatitis B medication into Ghana.

Robinson was intercepted on Tuesday, March 11, around 9:00 AM while driving a Sienna vehicle with registration number ENU 369 ZG, belonging to Nigeria’s Amadel Transport Company. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 1,200 ampoules of Euvax B, Eupenta injection, and Hepatitis B vaccine hidden in various compartments of the vehicle, including the door panels and spare tire section.

The routine security check involved officials from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Narcotics Control Commission, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and other agencies. The suspect was taken into custody, while the vehicle and drugs were seized for further investigation.

Volta Regional FDA Head, Gordon Akurugu, emphasized that drugs must only enter the country via air or sea borders, warning that smuggling compromises the quality and safety of medicines. He urged regulatory bodies in Nigeria to strengthen oversight to prevent such illegal trade.
