Job Seeker Jailed for Stealing Laptop at Ministry

An unemployed man, Foster Nyarko, has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing a laptop at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment.

Nyarko, 36, had visited the ministry seeking a cleaning job but instead entered an office on the second floor and took an HP laptop worth GH₵24,745. He hid it in his backpack and left the premises.

The owner, a lawyer and Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the ministry, later reported the theft. Investigations led to Nyarko’s arrest, and he confessed to selling the laptop in Takoradi.

The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, found him guilty of unlawful entry and theft. He was sentenced to one year for unlawful entry and two years for stealing, with both sentences running concurrently.

This was not Nyarko’s first offense—he had earlier been jailed for stealing a mobile phone at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice while looking for a job.
