A recently leaked document has revealed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) proposed a staggering budget for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including some eyebrow-raising expenses.
The budget, which was intercepted by JoySports, details how the GFA planned to distribute appearance fees not just to the 26 Black Stars players but also to an additional 28 individuals—bringing the total beneficiaries to 54 and costing the nation $5.4 million.
One of the surprising allocations was a $20,000 honorarium for Otto Addo’s so-called “Personal Assistant,” who received the same amount as the team’s scouts and the tournament’s head of delegation.
Another controversial item was the cost of air tickets. The GFA budgeted a flat $7,000 per player for flights to Abu Dhabi, despite the fact that players were traveling from different parts of the world, raising concerns about possible inflation of costs.
Further scrutiny of the budget also revealed a $10,000 honorarium for a “purse holder,” essentially a spending officer, even though the Finance Ministry already covers such responsibilities.
These revelations come just days after the GFA distanced itself from accountability demands, claiming they merely draft budgets without involvement in expenditures. However, this leaked document suggests otherwise.
