The Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) Chamber of Ghana has called on mobile money (MoMo) agents to prioritize their safety due to increasing violent attacks on vendors nationwide.
In February alone, three MoMo agents were killed in separate attacks. A vendor in Manso-Asamang, Ashanti Region, was shot while returning home. Another in Dormaa West was also attacked and killed, while a third vendor in Kumasi was shot as assailants stole GH¢10,000.
Authorities have arrested five suspects in connection with one of the killings, but fear remains high among vendors.
The EMIs Chamber is urging MoMo agents to close early, avoid carrying large cash amounts, install security systems, and collaborate with the police for protection. The chamber is also engaging the government and financial authorities to improve safety measures and debunk misconceptions that MoMo agents hold large sums of cash.
