A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck North Hollywood just as celebrities gathered for the Oscars afterparty, sending a jolt through the city. The tremor, which occurred shortly after 10 p.m. local time, was felt miles across Los Angeles but caused no reported damage or injuries.
The epicenter was located just a few miles from the Dolby Theatre, where the prestigious awards ceremony was held. Some attendees at the Vanity Fair afterparty described the sudden shake as intense, with high-rise buildings swaying and startled guests letting out screams.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that while the quake was widely felt, it was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami warning. The Los Angeles Fire Department also assured residents that no emergency earthquake response was necessary.
Southern California has experienced about 40 minor quakes since the beginning of March, though most were too weak to be noticed. Last month, a 3.7-magnitude tremor hit Malibu, and in December, a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook Northern California, briefly prompting a tsunami alert.
For Hollywood’s elite, the unexpected tremor added an extra jolt to an already eventful night.
