President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to revamp Osu Castle and its surrounding area into a vibrant tourist hub. Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, he announced that the former seat of government would be redesigned to include a pedestrian-friendly zone, an arts and craft market, as well as jewelry and gold trading spaces. The development, covering approximately 22 acres, aims to attract both local and international visitors.
Highlighting the significance of tourism, culture, and creative arts in Ghana’s economic growth, Mahama emphasized that his administration is committed to positioning Ghana as a premier global destination. He also introduced the Blackstar Experience, a tourism initiative designed to showcase Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through events such as street carnivals, film screenings, fashion festivals, and domestic tourism programs.
Additionally, Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting Ghana as a prime location for international conferences and business meetings, leveraging the country’s stability and strategic geographic location.
He also promised to restart the stalled Marine Drive Project, an ambitious plan to develop 241 acres of Accra’s coastline into a modern tourism and economic hub. Originally approved during his tenure in 2016, Mahama vowed to assess progress and push for its completion.
These initiatives, according to the president, will create jobs, boost economic activity, and further establish Ghana as a key player in global tourism.
