Fire Destroys NEDCo Warehouse in Tamale, Over 20 Transformers Lost

A massive fire engulfed the Central Warehouse of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale on Sunday afternoon, reducing critical electrical equipment to ashes. The blaze, which broke out around 2 PM, destroyed over 20 transformers and an unknown number of insulators.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene with two fire tenders from the Tamale Metro and Tamale Teaching Hospital stations. Due to the intensity of the flames, they had to deploy foam concentrate to bring the fire under control.

GNFS spokesperson Baba Hudu stated that the cause of the fire remains unknown but praised the swift response of fire personnel in preventing further damage.

Meanwhile, NEDCo’s Corporate Communications Manager, Maxwell Kotoka, assured the public that power supply to external areas remains unaffected. He clarified that only warehouse materials and an on-site transformer were damaged and that efforts were underway to restore electricity to the facility.
