Volta Minister Vows to Protect Tidal Wave Victims

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has assured residents of Ketu South affected by tidal waves that the government is taking urgent steps to safeguard lives and address the crisis.

During a visit to the hardest-hit communities—Agavedzi, Amutinu, and Salakope—he acknowledged the devastation caused by the sea’s invasion, which has destroyed homes, displaced families, and even forced the exhumation of bodies from cemeteries. Some residents reported that two women died from heart attacks after losing their homes.

Gunu, accompanied by security officials and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), stated that the government is committed to finding long-term solutions. In the meantime, NADMO will remain on-site to assist affected residents, and medical teams, including a clinical psychologist, will arrive next week to provide healthcare and trauma support.

Community leaders, including assembly members and traditional authorities, called for an urgent extension of the sea defense project to prevent further destruction. The Chief Fisherman of Salakope also suggested dredging as part of a more comprehensive approach to the problem.

The affected communities expressed gratitude for the relief items provided but emphasized the need for swift government action to permanently resolve the crisis.
