For years, the town of Weta in the Volta Region has been known for its contributions to Ghana’s leadership and governance. One of its most distinguished figures, the late Professor Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor, served as Chairman of the Council of State from 2009 to 2013, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s political and cultural landscape.
After years without representation in the Council, Weta has made a comeback. Gabriel Kwamigah Atokple Tanko, a 36-year-old businessman and philanthropist, has won the Volta Region’s Council of State seat in the 2025 elections, securing 24 out of 36 votes. His victory signifies a shift towards youth-led governance and economic-focused leadership.
Unlike Professor Awoonor, whose contributions were rooted in literature and diplomacy, Atokple brings an entrepreneurial background, prioritizing investment, job creation, and infrastructure development. His election highlights the growing demand for leaders who can merge policy with economic progress.
Delegates saw his practical approach to governance as a strong advantage, with his campaign focusing on business growth, youth employment, and community development. His win also aligns with a broader national movement encouraging young leaders in governance.
Atokple’s vision includes attracting businesses to the region, fostering public-private partnerships, and advocating for development projects that translate into tangible economic benefits for Volta residents. His leadership is expected to prioritize:
- Encouraging local businesses and foreign investment
- Creating employment opportunities for the youth
- Advocating for improved infrastructure
- Promoting agricultural innovation
- Ensuring Volta’s concerns are effectively represented at the national level
With his election, the Volta Region now has a representative focused on harnessing its potential for economic growth. His business expertise positions him as a key figure in bridging governance with development, ensuring Weta’s influence in national decision-making continues with a renewed vision.
