DR Congo Urges Arsenal, PSG, and Bayern to Drop ‘Blood-Stained’ Rwanda Sponsorship.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has called on Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris St-Germain (PSG) to cut ties with Rwanda’s “Visit Rwanda” sponsorship, citing humanitarian concerns linked to the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC.

This appeal follows reports that M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, have seized Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC, forcing over 400,000 people to flee their homes. A UN report claims Rwanda’s army is effectively controlling M23 operations, further intensifying tensions.

DRC’s Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner has written to the clubs’ owners, questioning the morality of their deals with Visit Rwanda, which she claims is funded by illicit minerals from DRC. She urged them to sever ties if not for their conscience, then for the victims of Rwanda’s actions.

Rwanda has dismissed allegations of sportswashing, arguing its sponsorships are meant to boost tourism. However, human rights groups say these deals help obscure Rwanda’s human rights record.

Arsenal, PSG, Bayern, and Visit Rwanda are yet to respond to these claims.
