Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has officially stepped down from his role after leading the organization since January 2017.
During his tenure, Mr. Agyeman achieved remarkable milestones, steering the GTA through the COVID-19 pandemic and championing its recovery. Under his leadership, international tourist arrivals grew from 355,108 in 2020 to over 1.1 million by 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Domestic tourism also flourished, with visitor numbers increasing from 456,000 in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023.
Key Achievements:
- Site Rehabilitation: Revamped tourist sites such as Kintampo Waterfalls, Bunso Eco Park, and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.
- Historic Landmarks: Redeveloped significant sites including the Accra Tourist Information Centre and the Bonwire Kente Museum.
- Major Campaigns: Launched “The Year of Return” and “December in Ghana,” positioning Ghana as a leading Christmas destination.
- Digital Initiatives: Introduced the “Visit Ghana” App and National Tourism Destination Single Window Project.
- Capacity Building: Trained over 3,000 individuals in tourism-related skills through the Ghana CARES Obaatanpa Initiative.
Mr. Agyeman handed over his duties to Otto Langmane, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Tourism, and Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO for Operations. His resignation is among several high-profile exits from state institutions following the recent presidential elections.
