The Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that first-year students who have already paid their tuition fees will receive reimbursements under the government’s free tertiary tuition policy.
This policy, a flagship initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), aims to improve access to higher education as part of the 2024 campaign promises.
Addressing the Appointments Committee in Parliament on January 20, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that the policy’s implementation would require an estimated ₵345 million. The funds will be allocated to tertiary institutions to process refunds for affected students.
He also emphasized the flexibility of the policy, allowing parents who prefer to pay tuition fees to do so voluntarily. “The beauty of this is that parents who are willing to pay can still contribute under this policy,” he explained.
The free tuition initiative seeks to alleviate financial burdens on families and promote equitable access to education. Mr. Iddrisu pledged to ensure its smooth rollout and effective implementation.
