Four Moroccan Truck Drivers Go Missing on Burkina-Niger Border.

Article arrow_drop_down

our Moroccan truck drivers have disappeared while crossing the dangerous border between Burkina Faso and Niger, a region plagued by jihadist activity. The drivers, traveling in three trucks, set off without a security escort after waiting a week in Dori, Burkina Faso. Their destination was Tera in Niger.

The area is a known hotspot for militant activity, as both Niger and Burkina Faso grapple with insurgencies by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The Moroccan embassy in Burkina Faso, in collaboration with local authorities, is working to locate the missing drivers.

According to Echarki El Hachmi, Secretary General of Morocco’s transporters’ union, the trucks had departed Casablanca weeks earlier, carrying infrastructure equipment. He called for enhanced security measures to protect Moroccan truckers in high-risk zones, noting a prior attack on Moroccan trucks near the Malian border with Mauritania earlier this month, though it resulted in no casualties.

The incident underscores the growing risks for transporters navigating the Sahel region, where militant attacks have destabilized trade routes and endangered lives.
