Prof. Jonas Kwabla Fiadzawoo, Principal of St Vincent College of Education in Yendi, has resigned just two months after his controversial appointment, which led to the closure of the college. In his resignation letter to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Fiadzawoo cited the community’s disapproval of his appointment as the reason for stepping down, emphasizing the importance of respecting local sentiments.
The college had been shut down on the orders of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, following protests against the board’s decision to appoint Prof. Fiadzawoo instead of a local candidate. The Overlord had advocated for prioritizing Dagomba candidates to address concerns of marginalization.
Despite a promise by the governing board to consider local applicants, the appointment of Prof. Fiadzawoo on November 27, 2024, went against the Overlord’s recommendation. Consequently, staff were ordered to vacate the college premises until the issue is resolved.
The Dagbon Traditional Council’s Registrar expressed disappointment, noting that no Dagomba had ever held the principal position since the college’s establishment, fueling long-standing grievances within the community.
