Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, has traveled to Mecca with his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, and close associates, including former Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, to perform the Islamic Umrah pilgrimage.
This spiritual journey comes shortly after President John Dramani Mahama’s January 7, 2025, inauguration. In a heartfelt social media post, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to Allah for His grace, shared his prayers for Ghana, and thanked his supporters for standing by him during the election.
Although he lost the presidential race to Mahama, Dr. Bawumia’s attendance at the inauguration and subsequent pilgrimage mark a period of reflection, renewal, and gratitude.
Umrah, often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage,” allows Muslims to seek spiritual cleansing and draw closer to Allah. Unlike Hajj, it can be performed year-round and involves rituals like Tawaf around the Kaaba, Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and trimming or shaving of hair.
