The New Takoradi beach received a boost in environmental sustainability during this festive season thanks to a thoughtful cleanup initiative. Markus Hilger, the Western Regional Coordinator of GIZ Ghana, alongside his children Joshua and Noah, organized a community beach cleanup and donated essential sanitation tools.
The effort, inspired by a family discussion on sustainable giving, aimed to tackle the environmental impact of excessive packaging often associated with holiday gifts. The Hilger family led the community in clearing debris from the beach, educating participants on sanitation, and providing equipment like wheelbarrows, rakes, spades, and litter-picking rods to support ongoing cleanliness.
Markus Hilger emphasized the importance of community-driven environmental care, saying, “Though I’m not from Ghana, living here makes it my responsibility to contribute to its sustainability.”
The initiative was praised by Corp Sayvee, founder of the CorpNation Foundation, who highlighted how such sustainable gifts promote lasting benefits for both people and the planet. The Takoradi community is now inspired and equipped to maintain a cleaner beach, setting an example for others to follow.
