A 48-year-old businessman, Jennings Tetteh Cole, has been accused of defrauding 18 individuals seeking rental accommodation in Accra, collecting over GH₵100,000 in total. The alleged scam involved advertising a single dilapidated room on the Jiji app and taking payments ranging from GH₵3,000 to GH₵9,200 from each victim under the pretense of renovations.
Despite promising to refund the money, Jennings failed to deliver and went into hiding. The victims later discovered that the same room had been rented to all of them, prompting them to report the matter to the police. Jennings was arrested in Nungua and reportedly confessed during questioning.
He has been charged with 18 counts of defrauding by false pretenses, pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail of GH₵150,000. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2025, as investigations continue, including efforts to apprehend an accomplice.
