
The Ghana Police Service has restored calm to Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region following an attempted gold theft at the Newmont mining site on the night of January 8, 2025.
A press release issued on January 9, 2025, confirmed that the incident escalated into a confrontation with security forces, resulting in the deaths of three suspects and injuries to four others.
“During the operation to contain the situation, the Police confronted the suspects, leading to the death of three persons and injuries to four others,” the statement revealed.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, played a pivotal role by coordinating with regional police and engaging community leaders throughout the night to prevent further escalation.
To ensure a thorough investigation, a special team has been dispatched from Accra. Additionally, reinforcements have been deployed to maintain law and order in the community.
The Police confirmed that the deceased were Muslims and assured that due legal processes are being followed to release the bodies to their families for burial.
“We urge the public to remain calm as the Police continue to work to ensure law and order prevail,” emphasized ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and properties in the Ahafo Region as investigations continue.
