Frank Agyekum, spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections to leadership issues under President Akufo-Addo.
In the election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured victory over the NPP by over 1.6 million votes. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Agyekum pointed to widespread public discontent, arrogance among party members, and the imposition of unpopular candidates as key reasons for the loss.
“The signs were there, and the narrative shows that things have been falling apart for a long time. The leader always bears the ultimate responsibility—it stops with him. When it’s good, we credit him; when it’s bad, he must share the blame,” he remarked.
Mr. Agyekum also criticized the party’s selection process for candidates, stating that the leadership failed to address grassroots concerns and underestimated public dissatisfaction.
The NPP’s loss has sparked calls within the party to reflect, refocus, and rebuild as it prepares for future elections.
