Poultry farmers in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of Ghana’s Central Region are facing severe challenges due to the soaring prices of feed ingredients like maize and soybean. This crisis has led to increased costs for eggs and poultry, pushing some farmers to the brink of shutting down their operations.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Jeremiah Makal, caretaker of Maxess Farms in Twifo Praso, explained how these high costs have already forced many farms in the region to close. Farmers are now traveling to other regions to source feed, which further raises their operational costs.
Mr. Makal appealed to the government for financial intervention to stabilize feed prices and support the poultry industry. He stressed that such support would help boost food security, create jobs, and sustain the local economy.
Farm closures have already resulted in significant job losses and decreased chicken and egg production, posing a threat to Ghana’s food security. Local farmers are urging the incoming government to prioritize this issue in its agenda.
