Game-Changer: Students Create Battery-Powered Fufu Machine.

The Akyem Vocational and Technical Institute (AVTI) in the Eastern Region has unveiled a groundbreaking battery-powered fufu-making machine at its inaugural graduation ceremony. Designed by students and tutors, the machine simplifies the labor-intensive process of making fufu while being efficient, quiet, and eco-friendly.

Unlike traditional machines, this innovation is designed to work seamlessly during power outages, making it a practical solution for homes and communities across Ghana. The project involved expertise from multiple disciplines, including metal fabrication, electrical engineering, and control systems, showcasing the students’ technical skills.

Speaking at the event, AVTI Vice Principal Ben Blanton Gidisu emphasized the school’s mission to develop local technologies that improve lives and drive economic growth. The ceremony also celebrated 93 students who completed training in various fields, including welding, plumbing, and electrical installation.

Newmont Akyem’s Senior Manager, Derek Boateng, lauded the institute’s achievements and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to empowering local communities through vocational education. Established in 2021 by Newmont’s Foundation, AVTI has 251 students and is now exploring ways to commercialize the fufu machine, aiming to revolutionize traditional food preparation across Ghana and beyond.
