An 18-year-old has been identified by police as the suspect in a mass shooting that left eight people dead and dozens injured in British Columbia, Canada.
Authorities say Jesse Van Rootselaar was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not yet established a motive.
The attack began at a private residence, where the suspect’s mother, 39, and 11-year-old stepbrother were discovered dead. Police then received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 13:30 local time on Tuesday. Officers arrived within minutes, entered the building after hearing gunfire, and located the suspect deceased shortly afterward.
At the school, six people were killed: a 39-year-old female staff member, three 12-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old boy. At least 25 others were injured. Two victims were airlifted to hospital and remain under medical care.
Investigators recovered two firearms at the scene — a long gun and a modified handgun — though authorities said it remains under review how each weapon was used. Police confirmed there is no indication of additional suspects.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers had previously attended the suspect’s family home on several occasions over recent years, including for matters related to mental health. The suspect had once held a valid firearms licence, which had since expired. Police also confirmed that Van Rootselaar had left Tumbler Ridge Secondary School about four years ago.
The small community of Tumbler Ridge, home to roughly 2,400 residents and about 160 secondary school students, has been deeply shaken by the tragedy. On Wednesday evening, hundreds gathered in the town square and outside the British Columbia legislature in Victoria to hold vigils, light candles and observe moments of silence.
British Columbia Premier David Eby said officials are reviewing the suspect’s prior interactions with public services. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the attack as an act of “unheard-of cruelty,” noting that several victims remain hospitalized.
Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka called the town “one big family” and urged residents to support one another in the days ahead.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain ongoing.
