More than 400 pupils and teachers at Nana Avoh Nwiah Basic School in the Jomoro Municipality had for years been forced to teach and learn in a deteriorating wooden structure widely described by residents as a death trap.
The unsafe building discouraged attendance and affected enrolment, as some parents feared for their children’s safety. Inside, there were no proper desks. Pupils sat on backless benches placed on dusty, uncemented floors. When heavy rains fell, teachers often shut the school because of the leaking, tattered roof. On days it remained open, more than 400 pupils were squeezed into a single classroom considered slightly safer than the rest of the structure.
The open design of the building created constant danger. Teachers recalled an incident where a snake fell from the roof into a classroom during lessons. The situation was worsened by poor road access to the community, including a collapsed bridge that left the area cut off for periods of time.
A New Beginning for the School
The situation is now changing following the intervention of the Member of Parliament for Jomoro and Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey.
The lawmaker funded and constructed a modern six-unit classroom block to replace the unsafe wooden structure. The new facility includes a headmaster’s office, a staff common room, modern washrooms, ceiling fans, and well-ventilated classrooms. It is scheduled for commissioning this March.
During an inspection tour of her projects, Madam Affo-Toffey said she was deeply moved when she first saw the conditions under which the children were studying. She explained that she quickly mobilised funds to provide a safer and more suitable learning environment.
She added that this project is part of a broader effort to improve educational infrastructure across the constituency. The new block will be fully furnished to ensure pupils learn in comfort and safety.
The MP also encouraged parents to prioritise their children’s education, stressing that quality infrastructure must be matched with commitment at home.

Zambia has begun formal steps to evacuate its citizens from parts of the Middle East as tensions and security risks in the region continue to rise.
