Don’t refer lab tests to private labs — Kbu Central Lab appeals

Article arrow_drop_down

It has consequently called on prescribers of laboratory requests of the hospital, made up of doctors and nurses, not to refer laboratory diagnostic cases to private laboratories around the hospital.

It said that even if there was the need for referral of any laboratory diagnostic cases, such referral must come from the central lab, rather than the medical staff.“Let the cases come to us, and then we will refer. Our laboratory is ready to take care of the hospital’s patients. Transforming the services and restoring trust in medical laboratory services in the KBTH is a collective responsibility of all of us.

“I call on all of us to rededicate ourselves to the advocacy to fight against the high speed or tendency of referring laboratory diagnostic cases to private laboratories around us. Let us work together to improve the system,” the acting Laboratory Manager of the KBTH, Dr Michael Amo Omari, appealed.

Dr Omari said this at the maiden Open Day celebration of the Central Laboratory of the KBTH in Accra last Wednesday. The Open Day, which was on the theme: “Transforming diagnostics, restoring trust: Our commitment to sustainability,” was in commemoration of World Laboratory Day which is celebrated on April 15, each year.Private LaboratoriesIt is very common to find patients of the KBTH being referred by doctors and nurses to have laboratory tests done in private laboratories around the KBTH, a situation Dr Omari described as a challenge to them.

Dr Omari said not only did the Central Laboratory have the capability to conduct all tests, but they were number one above those competitors and that was why the cases should first come to them and if there was the need to refer, they would do it themselves. He said the Central Laboratory, with its vision to be a centre of excellence in providing laboratory diagnostic services and the preferred medical laboratory centre within West Africa, had in the past journeyed through challenges of mistrust and criticisms, some relating to results, accuracy and financial inefficiencies.

He said they learned and acted on the criticisms, and now they had some results. He announced the ISO accreditation that the Central Laboratory had just received adding that the scope of the accreditation was unmatched in the country, pointing out that it covered all the units of the department.

Congratulating the Central Laboratory on their ISO accreditation, the Director of Allied Health at the Ministry of Health (MOH), Dr Ignatius Awinibuno, said the ISO accreditation the Central Laboratory had received, was the most current, 2022 which madethe facility one of the few across the world that had been able to achieve that.He said the MOH recognised that laboratories formed the backbone of evidence-based health care ,explaining that accurate diagnosis, effective treatment plans and robust disease surveillance hinged on quality and reliable laboratory services and it was for that reason that the ministry remained unwavering in its commitment to strengthen laboratory , across the country.

To this end, he said, the ministry had made significant progress on the National Laboratory Policy which was aimed at standardising laboratory services nationwide to, among others, ensure access to universal health care through well-coordinated laboratory systems.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of KBTH, Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere, pledged the support of the management of the hospital to ensure that the accreditation attained was sustained. He said he expected that the Central Laboratory would be able to perform a lot more services with their attainment of the ISO accreditation.Other speakers at the event included the Laboratory Focal Person of the National Tuberculosis Control Programme, Dr Felix Kodzo Besah Sorvor.

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to let it enforce ban on transgender service members for now

The Trump administration on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to let it begin enforcing a ban on transgender service members, escalating a fight over a controversial policy that has faced numerous legal setbacks in recent weeks. The emergency appeal thrusts the high court into another politically charged dispute over a key aspect of Trump’s agenda. It comes as the justices have increasingly been pressed by the administration to unlock various parts of his agenda that have been held up by lower courts reviewing the legality of the initiatives. The military ban was announced by Trump earlier this year and would have taken effect late last month, but several lower courts issued rulings against it before it could be implemented. In the case at hand, a federal judge in Washington state decided that the policy likely violated the constitutional rights of a number […]

UK officials say the operation reflects a growing partnership between the British government and its counterparts in Accra and Abuja to curb irregular migration and enforce immigration laws.“This flight demonstrates how international partnerships deliver on working people’s priorities for swift returns and secure borders,” said Angela Eagle, the UK’s Minister for Border Security and Asylum. “Through the Plan for Change, we’re going further in restoring order to a broken system, accelerating returns of those with no right to be […]

I won’t renew Zoomlion contract if sweepers’ salary remains GH¢250 – Basintale declares

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has made a firm declaration not to renew the existing contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited if the current wage of GH¢250 for sanitation workers remains unchanged. In a strongly worded Facebook post on Friday, 25 April, Basintale criticised the current terms of engagement, describing them as exploitative and unjust to the Ghanaian youth. His comments follow growing public pressure, particularly from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, who has long campaigned against the contract’s renewal, citing poor treatment of workers and breach of contract terms. Echoing similar sentiments, Basintale asserted that the present arrangement is a “rip-off” of poor Ghanaians and cannot be allowed to continue under the current administration. “All my life, I have fought for integrity and for the better placement of the youth and people of […]

Farmers commend COCOBOD over decision to announce new prices in August

Farmers in Sehwi Aboagyekrom in the Western North Region have lauded the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) following the announcement that a new cocoa producer price will be declared in August 2025. The anticipated price is expected to surpass that of neighbouring Ivory Coast, a move the farmers believe will enhance their livelihoods and address key challenges facing the cocoa industry. The Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Ransford Abbey, made the announcement during a three-day working tour of the Western North and Western South Regions. Addressing a gathering of cocoa farmers at Aboagyekrom in the Sehwi Wiawso Municipality, Dr. Abbey explained that the planned price increment is part of the government’s effort to support cocoa farmers and reduce the temptation to smuggle produce across borders, where prices are currently more favourable. He emphasized that the decision aligns with a broader […]

Atlantic Lithium appeals to government to help save Ghana’s first lithium mine

The company, which has invested approximately $70 million since 2016, is developing what would be Ghana’s first lithium mine.  The project, located near Mankessim in the Central Region, was expected to place Ghana among the world’s top 10 spodumene concentrate producers. However, sharp declines in lithium prices—down more than 80 per cent from their November 2022 peak—have thrown its future into uncertainty. “We have done the maths and it doesn’t make sense at all,” Atlantic Lithium's General Manager, Ahmed-Salim Adam, told Reuters. “We have written to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for urgent help on the fiscals. If not, the project cannot proceed.” Ghana, already Africa’s leading gold producer, had hoped to benefit from the growing global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) by establishing the Ewoyaa mine as a strategic source of lithium, a key component in EV batteries. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appealed for calm at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), asking doctors to return to work. Following the tensions generated by his unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, the Juaboso MP has stated that he had no intention to disrespect any health worker. At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, April 24, Mr. Akandoh stated his action was triggered by a personal experience, empathy, and commitment to the health sector. “It can happen to anybody; it happened to me. When I had an accident, the first place I was rushed to was Nyinahini District Hospital. I never imagined that I would one day be at Nyinahini District Hospital, but I was there. “And so, today, from where I sit, I will contribute my quota to the development of this sector. I have […]
