The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has dismissed as false a viral online report claiming that its General Superintendent, Pastor William Kumuyi, accused the United States of plotting to seize Nigeria’s natural resources and denied the occurrence of Christian genocide in the country.
The false story, first published by an online platform called Ibom Focus, spread widely on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, sparking public criticism and confusion. The publication alleged that Pastor Kumuyi made the remarks during a press briefing in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Monday via Pastor Kumuyi’s verified X handle, the church described the report as a complete fabrication.
“The Deeper Christian Life Ministry condemns in the strongest terms the malicious and entirely false news report circulated by a faceless platform called ‘Ibomfocus,’” the statement read. “The story titled ‘America is Trying to Steal our Natural Resources; There is No Christian Genocide in Nigeria, says Pastor Kumuyi,’ is a total fabrication and the figment of the imagination of its authors.”
The church clarified that Pastor Kumuyi has not been in Nigeria recently and did not hold any press conference in Lagos.
“Pastor Kumuyi did not at any time address a press conference or make the aforementioned statements. He has been outside Nigeria for some time, holding gospel programmes in the Oceania region and the Far East,” the statement explained.
The ministry added that Pastor Kumuyi is known for his focus on preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and does not engage in political discussions or commentary.
“The Ministry warns all those bent on mischief by seeking to drag our General Superintendent into politics or fabricating stories in his name to desist from such actions. In the future, any such activity may attract legal or disciplinary action,” the statement concluded.
The clarification comes amid renewed global discussions on religious freedom in Nigeria following comments by former US President Donald Trump, who recently alleged a “Christian genocide” in the country.
