China announced on Friday that it will impose temporary duties on pork imports from the European Union, citing evidence of dumping practices.
The move follows a year-long investigation launched by Beijing after the EU began scrutinizing Chinese subsidies for its electric vehicle industry.
“Investigating authorities have preliminarily determined that imports of pork and pig by-products originating in the European Union are being dumped,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
As a result, Beijing will apply provisional anti-dumping measures in the form of deposits, with duties ranging from 15.6% to 62.4%, starting September 10.
The duties remain provisional until the ministry concludes its full investigation, which has been extended until December.
The decision adds new tension to already strained China–EU relations, shaped by disputes over trade, technology, and the fallout from Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Beijing has maintained it is a neutral party in the conflict, calling for peace talks while rejecting accusations of aiding Moscow. Earlier Friday, China’s foreign ministry condemned US President Donald Trump’s call for Europe to pressure China economically over the war.

Will more defence funds make Nigeria safer
Nigeria has spent about 32.88 trillion naira on defence in the last 15 years, roughly 12.5 percent of total national budgets of 262.834 trillion naira in that period, yet insecurity remains widespread across the country . Despite these rising allocations, many communities still face insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and oil related violence, raising doubts about whether more money alone can make Nigerians safer . Security trackers estimate that over 100,000 people have been killed in violent incidents since 2012, with thousands abducted and about 3.726 million citizens displaced and living in roughly 3,900 camps nationwide . The trend has continued into 2026, with at least 1,091 deaths recorded from violent attacks in just the first 41 days of the year, underscoring the scale of Nigeria’s security crisis despite years of increased defence spending . Against this backdrop, the National […]

US officials spent the weekend trying to build support for a new coalition to patrol the strait and said they hoped to announce it in the coming days, although it remains unclear which countries will join or when any operation would start .
