The African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption has pledged to deepen collaboration with young people across the continent in order to tackle corruption and build a future based on integrity and justice. Chairperson Kwami Edem Senanu made the commitment in Arusha, Tanzania, in a statement marking International Anti Corruption Day 2025.
Senanu described Africa’s youth as future custodians of the continent who are not only victims of corruption and illicit financial flows but also powerful agents of change. He warned that corruption undermines development, erodes public trust and blocks human progress by stealing resources and opportunities.
Citing estimates by Mo Ibrahim, he noted that Africa loses around 125 billion dollars every year to corruption. He said the day should therefore be seen not only as a reminder of losses but also as a fresh opportunity to renew collective resolve to confront corruption in all its forms.
The 2025 theme, “Uniting with the Youth Shaping tomorrow’s Integrity,” highlights the transformative potential of Africa’s growing youth population. Senanu said young people are not just leaders of tomorrow but key changemakers today, whose energy, innovation and desire for justice are vital for building societies where integrity thrives.
He stressed that winning the anti graft fight will require a generational shift in mindset, technology and leadership. Across Africa, he added, millions of young people are demanding ethical leadership and driving grassroots movements for transparency and social justice.
Senanu called Africa’s youth the heartbeat of the continent’s progress and the real vehicle for achieving “the Africa we want.” By investing in their skills and embracing their ideas and digital talents, he said, countries can bypass old corrupt systems and build more transparent institutions.
He assured young Africans that the AU Advisory Board remains committed to empowering them and investing in the next generation of ethical leaders. The board plans to strengthen current and future programmes that equip youth with tools, knowledge and opportunities to champion integrity and accountability.
Senanu also urged governments, institutions and citizens to unite with young people by creating regular spaces for youth engagement, dialogue and initiative support. He said nurturing a culture where integrity is celebrated will help ensure that honesty, fairness and accountability define Africa’s future and legacy.
