Speaker Suleiman: “Now Is Not the Right Time” for Gov’s Race
The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly , Rt. Hon. Abubakar Suleiman , has rejected early calls urging him to run for governor in 2027 , calling it premature and inappropriate at this stage.
His response came after the Bauchi State Coalition of Youth and Civil Society Groups held a press conference earlier this week, endorsing him as a potential candidate.
They described him as a capable leader with strong governance credentials and public trust.
But Suleiman said:
“This is not the time.”
He added that he remains focused on serving the people who elected him and fulfilling his legislative responsibilities.
“Our Focus Is Governance, Not Politics” – Suleiman
Suleiman thanked the youth coalition for their support but made it clear that his attention is still on current duties .
“We sincerely appreciate the compliments,” he said.
“But now is not the appropriate time to talk about political positions.”
He stressed that his top priority is representation, service , and accountability to constituents .
“There is still a lot to do in my current role. I cannot afford to look ahead while the people still need me here.”
He also said any future political move will be taken transparently , and only after consultation with party leaders and citizens .
“Let Us Finish Our Mandate First” – Speaker
Suleiman reminded supporters that he was elected to serve a specific purpose.
“We were given a mandate by our people. It is our duty to fulfill it.”
He urged stakeholders to continue supporting his legislative work rather than pushing for premature political shifts.
“Our commitment is to serve with integrity. We will decide when the time is right.”
He called for patience from well-wishers, saying:
“Let us finish what we started before we begin something new.”
